| Part IV of the annual report is
OPTIONAL; local sections are not required to complete this part of the
report. If you experience problems uploading these files, please e-mail
them to Juanita Hampton at j_hampton@acs.org and indicate where the

eligibility, local sections must complete Part IV. A local section
may nominate themselves for multiple awards. However, only one
nomination per award is permitted. A separate form must be completed
for each award entry and included in Part IV. Selection of the award
winners is determined solely by members of the Committee presenting the
awards. Award finalists will be announced in June 2010; winners will be
announced on August 24, 2010 at the ChemLuminary Awards, held during
the Fall National Meeting in Boston, MA. |

First Community College Teaching Award The ACS gives awards at local, regional and national levels for excellent teaching at high schools and colleges. The Santa Clara Valley Section has established an award that is the first in the nation to recognize the contributions of community college chemistry instructors to science education. Professor Jeanette Medina, an exemplary faculty member from the chemistry department at Cañada College in Redwood City, California, has won the first Teacher-Scholar Award for Community College Chemistry Faculty. She received a plaque and $500 at the the Section's November 19 dinner meeting in Santa Clara. The event was described on p. 49 of the December 21, 2009 issue of C&EN. A gift of $500 was also given her department. The president of the American Chemical Society, Tom Lane, presented the award. An unusually large number of students took advantage of our "free dinner for students" offer for our dinner meetings; students were there not only from Cañada College, but also from San Jose State University, Santa Clara University and U.C. Santa Cruz. Also attending were Dr. Tom Mohr, President of Cañada College, and Dr. Sarah Perkins, Vice President Instruction. Not only did Dr. Tom Lane bring the prestige of the ACS Presidency to the meeting, but because of his extensive involvement with community colleges, it was particularly appropriate for him to be the person to make the presentation. As a student he attended a community college; after he received his doctorate and became an industrial chemist, he taught at his local community college as an adjunct instructor; finally, he has served on its board of trustees, and chaired the board. Also, he and his wife have established two scholarship funds for community college students. His talk was extraordinarily dynamic and inspiring, and the entire evening was a huge success. We hope that this initiative will generate publicity and catalyze the creation of similar awards in other ACS local sections, at regional levels, and ultimately at the national level. The publicity surrounding these awards is expected to increase the visibility, respect and appreciation accorded to community college science education, both by other chemists and the general public.

This year the Santa Clara Valley Section and the CA Los Padres Section collaborated to hold a meeting at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI). Over 80 ACS members attended this one-time event including some CA Los Padres Section members who rode a bus over 4 hours each way to participate. The research scientists at the MBARI gave a tour of their facilities and described the research that is being conducted there. Ken Johnson gave a presentation of his research on the impact of climate change on the ocean. In addition to bringing two local sections together, this event also provided an opportunity for participation in local events for the Monterey area ACS members.

Local Section and Division
Interaction Award
A Local Section or Division may nominate themselves for up to 3 Joint
Awards. However, if the same Division and Local Section have held
several joint events these should be combined into one nomination. A
separate form must be completed for each entry. Nominations are limited
to 1,000 words and should (1) describe the nature of the Local
Section-Division interaction, (2) Indicate the division which
conducted the joint event or activity and (3) explain why it
should be considered for the award. Please do not send supporting
materials. Events should be innovative and extra consideration will be
given to events that reach a wide audience, and have good publicity.
Activities which were organized and planned jointly rather than simply
financially supported by one or other group will be favored. The
nomination must reflect the criteria for the award and must be unique
for each entry. |
