STUDENT AFFILIATES COMMITTEE
In 2007, the committee was involved in the following
activities:
1.
Undergraduate Research Conference
The annual undergraduate research conference was
held in May of 2007 at Sonoma State University (SSU). Approximately 150
students and faculty attended the conference which featured both poster
and oral presentations. Many students from our Section gave
presentations at the conference. I served as a consultant to the
faculty at SSU who were organizing the event. The 2008 conference
is set for May 3, 2008 at Santa Clara University. The keynote
address will be given by Dr. Richard Zare (Chair, Chemistry Department,
Stanford University). The California Association of Chemistry Teachers
has been invited to attend the conference so we expect a good turnout.
2.
Santa Clara University SAACS wins award
Once again one of our student affiliate chapters
(Santa Clara University (SCU)) was recognized by the National office;
this student group earned an Outstanding Chapter award for their work
in the 2006-2007 academic year. The SCV section is particularly
proud of the hard work done by the students in each of our SAACS
chapters; each group was involved in a wide variety of activities and
provided support to the section, their departments, and the community.
3. SAACS
student participation in chemistry-related events
The Section continued to welcome SAACS members to
its monthly dinner meetings; students from schools such as San Jose
State University, SCU, and UC Santa Cruz were treated to dinners
followed by interesting chemistry-related seminars. In addition
to the dinner meetings, we assisted the section with its participation
in National Chemistry Week activities (approximately 25 student
volunteers assisted at the Children’s Discovery Museum event in
San
Jose). We plan to continue to host students at the monthly
meetings.
