BUBBLE Grant Committee Report
2014
The Santa Clara Valley Section of the
American Chemical Society provides elementary and secondary
school educators with funds for science programs. The
BUBBLE Grant program was established in 2011 by a $500 donation
from ACS member Bryan Balazs of the California Section. His
generous annual donations have continued to support the program,
which awards up to $500 per year to worthwhile science projects.
Grants are awarded for projects that enhance the teaching
of physical, life or earth science. Qualified uses of the
funds are for purchases related to the proposed project such as
scientific equipment, instructional materials and/or supplies.
The 2014 BUBBLE Grant Committee consisted of
Rex Maimait, Peter Rusch and myself. The committee
received three applications in 2014, from Piedmont Hills High
School, Sequoia Hills High School and Bret Harte Middle
School. We decided to award $250 to Jessica Magallanes, a
science teacher at Sequoia Hills High School in Redwood City.
The funds will be used to support its STEM Club, which provides
after school science learning experiences to elementary students
in Redwood City schools. We also awarded $250 to Hope
Oliver, a science teacher at Bret Harte Middle School in San
Jose. These funds will be used to purchase chemicals and
science kits to support students' hands-on activities in her
physical science classes.
Assuming that the Bubble Grant program is
continued in 2015, I expect to continue to serve on the
committee. Hopefully, Rex and Peter will continue to serve
as well.
The 2015 Bubble Grant Request for Proposals
will soon be posted on the SCV Section's website. Later in
2015, I plan to set up a committee meeting to discuss our plans
for disseminating the request to various sources in the
education community.
