ACS on Campus at Stanford
University
September 20, 2014
The Santa Clara Valley ACS local section
partnered with ACS on Campus at Stanford University on September
20, 2014. ACS on Campus is a free outreach program
dedicated to helping students, post-docs, and faculty members
advance in their careers. The program is designed to bring
together leaders in chemistry, publishing, research, science
communication and career development to university campuses to
present seminars and workshops. A PDF file of the flyer and
agenda for the Stanford ACS on Campus can be seen by clicking here; it includes
modules from three core content areas: Career Development &
Planning, The Publishing Process, and Research Resources in
addition to the other areas listed on our website. While open to
the public, ACS on Campus is most appropriate for graduate
students, post-doctoral researchers, undergraduate, faculty
members and non-faculty researchers. The event is open to all
disciplines of the sciences. The ACS on Campus is hosting a one
day event on Saturday, September 20 at Stanford, featuring
sessions on publishing, SciFinder, grant proposal writing, and
ACS Career Pathways.
The afternoon including a “Finding your Path”
career session conducted by Mark Frishberg, California Local
Section member. This is a career exploration workshop run by the
ACS to help chemists learn about the four main career pathways
available to chemical professionals: Higher education, industry,
government, and entrepreneurial careers and why each one may or
may not be the right choice for you. This workshop is not only
ideal for graduate students and recent grads, but also
experienced professionals who are considering a career change.
In addition to learning about which types of careers are
available in each pathway, you'll also learn about the job
market and hiring trends to help you make your choice.
Grace Baysinger, ACS member and Stanford
Chemistry librarian, was the host of the event. About 75
students from local universities including Stanford, San Jose
State and Santa Clara University attended.
The organizers from ACS on Campus contacted
the local sections in the area to see if there was interest
participating in this event. Ashley Piekarski, Santa Clara
Valley Chair Elect gave a presentation on the Santa Clara Valley
local section activities and encouraged student participation in
their local ACS section. In addition, several volunteers
including Bonnie Charpentier, Lee Latimer, Howard and Sally
Peters, and Natalie McClure from the local section helped with
set up and registration. In addition, the
volunteers joined the networking lunch with the students who
attended the workshops. These types of partnerships with
National ACS and the local sections will hopefully help increase
membership!
