Student Activities
2014
During 2014, the Student Affairs Committee was involved in the
following activities:
1. Undergraduate Research Symposium
The annual undergraduate research symposium was held in May of
2014 in the California Section at the University of San
Francisco. Approximately 150+ students and faculty from
the Santa Clara Valley, California, and Sacramento Sections
attended the event, which featured numerous poster and oral
presentations. Many students from our section (Santa Clara
University, San Jose State University, U.C. Santa Cruz, etc.)
attended and gave oral and poster presentations at the
conference. The conference is slated to be held in the Santa
Clara Valley Section at UC Santa Cruz in May of 2015. I
have provided assistance to the UCSC organizers for the event.
2. Santa Clara University and San Jose State Student
Member Chapters Win Awards
Two of our local section Student Member Chapters were once again
recognized by the National office with Chapter awards for their
activities in the 2013-2014 academic year: Santa Clara
University and San Jose State University Chapters won
Commendable Chapter Awards.
The SCV section is particularly proud of the hard work done by
the students and faculty advisors in our student chapters; each
group was involved in a wide variety of activities and provided
support to the section, their departments, and the community.
3. Student Participation in Chemistry-Related Events
a. The section continued to welcome student members to its
monthly dinner meetings; students from local 4-year universities
and community colleges were treated to dinners followed by
interesting chemistry-related seminars. Dr. Sally Peters,
who oversees most of the planning associated with the monthly
meetings, has been the point person for sending out the call for
students.
b. NCW: student members assisted the section with its
participation in National Chemistry Week activities. I
contacted faculty at several local universities and community
colleges to ask them to encourage their students to volunteer at
the event. Approximately 20 student volunteers
assisted at the Martin Luther King Library event in San
Jose. Children and their parents were treated to a morning
of hands-on science demonstrations at this annual event.
c. MLK Library event for Summer Reading Kickoff:
student members assisted the section and Dr. Abby Kennedy with
hands-on science demonstrations at the library’s Summer Reading
Program Kickoff on June1, 2014. This was a slightly
smaller-scale version of the NCW program that Dr. Kennedy
organizes and was well received by the volunteers and attendees.
Respectfully submitted,

Linda S. Brunauer
Student Affairs Committee Chairperson
